THE MIRACULOUS MANDARIN
Biography
One-act ballet-pantomime.
Composer - Bela Bartok. Libretto - Melchior Lengyel (Menyhert Lebovics), Vyacheslav Goncharov. Choreography and staging - Vyacheslav Goncharov, Diploma work at the Higher School of Choreography (now - Faculty of Choreography of the T.K. Zhurgenov KazNAA). Production designer - Orynbasar Zhanbyrshiev.
The premiere took place on June 21, 2001 on the stage of the Abay SAOBT, in one evening with the one-act ballets “Cosmos of the Soul” and “The Mask Theater” choreographed by Gulzhan Tutkibayeva.
Characters and performers: Girl - Kuralay Sarkytbayeva; Mandarin - Zhanat Kartamysov; Owner of the brothel - Dmitry Sushkov; Bandits - Yerzhan Doskarayev, Ulan Badenov; Student - Amangeldy Yusupov; Drunken visitor - Amirzhan Shakhanov.
Slums of a big city. In a large gloomy room, three bandits force a street girl to dance with aim to lure customers. Not finding anything of value first in the pockets of the Drunken visitor, and then the Student, the bandits drive them away.
The Chinese Mandarin was the third to respond to the girl's inviting dance. A stranger from a foreign world looks at his seductress with a frightening gaze, and he is seized by a monstrous passion. He pursues the girl for a long time, trying in vain to hug her. Finally, three robbers come out of their hiding place to finish off a dangerous stranger.
After having robbed the Mandarin, they try to kill him. However, the Mandarin again rushes to the girl. Only after the girl embraces him, and he feels the boundless joy of satisfying his passion, the spell of immortality stops. Bleeding out, the Mandarin dies.
