Biography

One-act ballet.

Music by G. Bizet and R. Shchedrin, choreography by B. Ayukhanov. Based on the novel of the same title by P. Merime.

The ballet was staged for the ECM "Young Ballet of Alma-Ata" under the direction of B. Ayukhanov, the premiere took place in Minsk in 1969.

First performers: Carmen - Nadezhda Pivnitskaya (first performer), Natalya Karboinova-Goncharova (second performer).

The ballet is based on the life story of a femme fatale named Carmen, a beautiful, quick-tempered, temperamental gypsy who, being under arrest, seduces Sergeant José and persuades him to free her. Deprived of all privileges, turning into ordinary soldiers, Carmen got tired of him, and she becomes interested in famous, rich, handsome bullfighter Escamillo. Deprived of any hope of returning Carmen, Jose kills his beloved so that no one gets her.

Composers - Georges Bizet, Rodion Shchedrin. Libretto and choreography by Alberto Alonso, based on the short story of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. Choreographer - Timofey Lavrenyuk (Moscow, Russia). Scenography - Boris Messerer. Production conductor - Nurzhan Baibusinov.

The premiere took place on April 14, 16, 2006 at the Abay SAOBT.

Carmen's desire for freedom of thought and action leads her to the conflict and tragedy. One cannot live with the truth of passion in the society. She is proud, and by death she asserts her freedom.

The premiere at the «Astana Ballet» theatre took place on October 14, 2022.
