Biography

(30.07.1947, Baytown, Texas, USA) - ballet dancer, choreographer.

Since 1965, she began working at the Joffrey Ballet, at the age of 20 she already tried herself as a choreographer, and staged the productions in China, France, Italy, Poland, South America.

M. Sappington is the first American who worked with the China Central Ballet Group.

In 1969, she was a co-author, choreographer and performer in the original off-Broadway revue "Oh! Calcutta!”.

In 1971 she staged her first ballet “Weewis”. In the US, she has worked with such companies as "Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre", "Carolina Ballet", "Joffrey Ballet", "Houston Ballet", "Harkness Ballet", "Milwaukee Ballet", "Pacific Northwest Ballet", "Pennsylvania Ballet", as well as with various companies on international level "Aterballetto" and "Nederlands Dans Theater", choreographed for many opera productions: "Aida" (G. Verdi), "Samson and Delilah" (C. Saint-Saens), "La Gioconda" (A. Ponchielli) for the theater " San Francisco Opera (USA).

In 1975, she was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Choreographer and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Choreography of the performance "Where's Charlie?".

In 2009, she was invited to Kazakhstan to stage the ballet "Tlep and Sarykyz" to the music by A. Serkebayev, which premiered on January 23-24, 2009 at the Abay SAOBT. The idea of the ballet belongs to the philanthropist S. Iskakov and is dedicated to the famous Kazakh kobyz player Tlep Aspantai-uly (1757-1820), the libretto by the Russian playwright E. Radzinsky, the artist E. Heydebrecht (Germany) and the costume designer C. Joly de Lotbiniere (USA).
