Biography

Ballet dancer, ballet master, silent film actor. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1933).
1909 - graduated from the Ballet and Drama Department of Moscow Imperial Theater School, teachers: N. P. Domashev, V. D. Tikhomirov.
1909-1926, 1931-1934, 1942-1946 - ballet soloist and ballet master of the SABT of the USSR. Repertoire: Desiree ("Sleeping Beauty"), Siegfried ("Swan Lake"), Jean de Brienne, Abderakhman ("Raymonda"), Solor ("La Bayadère"), Conrad ("Le Corsaire"), Basile, Espada ("Don Quixote”), Colin (“La Fille mal gardee”), Franz (“Coppelia”), Albert (“Giselle”), Narr' Havas (“Salammbo”), Phoebus, Gringoire (“Esmeralda”). In late period, he performed as a character dancer, possessed a light, airy jump, expressive facial expressions, and was a brilliant partner.
1912, 1914 - partner of the famous variety dancer M. R. Reizen, with whom he toured in London, Berlin, Paris, the Baltic countries.
1922-1924 - Head of the ballet troupe of the Bolshoi Theater of the USSR (Moscow). At the Bolshoi Theater he staged the ballets: "Capriccio Espagnol" to music by C. Saint-Saens (1923), "Scheherazade" to music by Rimsky-Korsakov (1923).
He was engaged in pedagogical and ballet master's activities in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Tatarstan, Kyrgyzstan, took part in training of national ballet professionals of the Union republics. He staged the ballets "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" (1946, Kazan; 1948, Frunze), "Swan Lake" (1926 and 1935, Kiev; 1949, Frunze), "Red Flower"/ "Red Poppy", (1949 G., Frunze). He acted in silent films.
Septemer 1937 - October 1939 - Head of theKazakh ballet, combined the positions of the chief ballet master, first dancer and the teacher of the SOBT. For the Russian troupe, he revised "Coppelia", and staged "Swan Lake". However, he mainly focused on the creation of the Kazakh national performance. The result of the creative search of the ballet master was the first national ballet "Kalkaman and Mamyr" by composer V. Velikanov (libretto by M. Auezov), where L. Zhukov performed the main part of Kalkaman (1938)
