The action of the ballet takes the viewer to the bloody XIII century of the Mongol-Tatar invasion. The son of Juchi Khan, Khan-Zada, having gone hunting in the Kazakh steppes, frightens a herd of kulans from the inhabited pasture. Only the old leader stands in the way of the uninvited guest. An arrow stuck in his leg was the answer to a silent question about the invasion. However, the fearless kulan did not retreat, Khan-Zada - the pride and hope of his father - dies with a wild cry, trampled by the hooves of an angry old kulan. Severe punishment awaits the one who brings bad news to the father about his son. And then the brave Kerbuga tells all the truth with the help of his dombra. Singing strings expressively paint a picture of death. The order of Jochi Khan is impartial: to fill the dombra with lead.
