Biography

(13.09.1906, St. Petersburg - 12.04.1966) - ballet dancer, choreographer. Honored Artist of the KazSSR (1946).

He gained ballet education at the evening courses of the Leningrad Choreographic School (now the A.Ya. Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet).

1925-1936 worked as a ballet dancer in the theaters of St. Petersburg, Kharkov and Sverdlovsk.

1936 - 1945 - leading soloist of the Abay SAOBT. Repertoire: Siegfried (“Swan Lake”), Albert (“Giselle”), Prince Desire (“Sleeping Beauty”), Frondoso (“Laurencia”), Vaslav (“The Fountain of Bakhchisarai”), Basil (“Don Quixote”), Aidar ("Spring"), etc. From the first days of the work on the stage, he was engaged in pedagogical and ballet master activities.


In the Abay Theatre he staged a number of ballets of the classical heritage: "Coppelia" by A. Delibes (1937, 1944), "The Little Humpbacked Horse" by C. Pugni (1939), "Swan Lake" by P.I. Tchaikovsky (1940), "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" by B.V. Asafyev (1942), “Don Quixote” by L. Minkus (1945), “Sleeping Beauty” by P. I. Tchaikovsky (1954), “The Bronze Horseman” by R. Gliere (1955).Yu.P. Kovalev created the national ballet "Dzungarian Gate" to the music by L. Stepanov (1956), and staged the Kazakh dances in the national operas "Kyz Zhibek" by Y. Brusilovsky (second edition), "Birzhan and Sara" by M. Tulebayev, " Amangeldy” by M. Tulebayev and Y. Brusilovsky, “Beket” by A. Zilber. Yu.P. Kovalev made a significant contribution to the development of Kazakh ballet, was at the origins of the development of national choreography on the professional stage.
